about me
Hello, my name is Jonathan. I'm an amateur photographer currently based in Brussels, Belgium. Photography is a hobby I discovered towards the end of 2019. Most of my photos are taken in New Zealand, where I lived for six years until October 2022, then moving to Belgium. I enjoy aviation photography; most of my pictures were taken at Kapiti Coast Airport or Wellington International Airport. I recently started enjoying landscape and wildlife photography as well. I share my landscape, wildlife, and aviation photos on Instagram (@jony.aviation, @jonathansieuwphotography) and Flickr (Jonathan Sieuw).
I never had any formal training, I never had photography classes and I never participated in any photo clubs as they were not offered at schools I’ve attended. In New Zealand, commuting two hours one-way to school, and with competitive soccer and tennis training sessions with the men’s team most nights, I simply had not enough time left to drive to the nearest photo club. Everything I know, I learned through trial and error, reading online, watching YouTube videos, and feedback from photographers on Instagram. With Lightroom and Photoshop, I tried different editing techniques to develop a style I enjoy, that I amend with feedback. Through Instagram and by regularly going to the airport, I was able to connect with both a local and national community of aviation photographers which I am still in contact with today, despite moving to Belgium. Notably, I joined an 'editing chat' in 2019 which has allowed me to share photos and edits that I am unsure about, receive feedback, and form close connections with photographers across the country, and now across the world.
I hope you enjoy the selection of photos on this page and seeing my path through photography over the last four and a bit years. If you would like to see more of my portfolio, please click on the icons below:
